Research reviews report that mechanical traction can improve pain and function for some people with lumbar disc herniation, especially in the short term. Results vary, which is why we examine first and never promise the same outcome to everyone.

A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis found short-term improvements in pain and function compared with sham or no traction, while long-term evidence remained limited.

Another meta-analysis found that mechanical traction added to physical therapy improved pain and disability in lumbar disc herniation compared with physical therapy alone.

A 2025 review of conservative care found traction, exercise, and manipulation may improve pain and function, while also emphasizing wide differences among studies and patients.

Important: Decompression is not appropriate for everyone. New loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness in the saddle area, or rapidly worsening weakness needs urgent medical evaluation—not a routine decompression visit.

Does decompression replace surgery or medical care?
